LIVERPOOL vs. HERTHA BERLIN
| Thursday, July 29th |
Pre-Season | Austria
7:20PM BST/2:20PM EST
Liverpool finish the Austrian phase of their 2021-22 pre-season against Hertha Berlin. While the two sides have never met in competitive action, it will mark the second time the Reds have faced the Bundesliga side in a friendly since Jürgen Klopp arrived at the club, with the two sides previously linking up in the summer of 2017.
For Liverpool, it will be a stronger lineup, with a largely first choice eleven expected to start and the likes of Diogo Jota and Andy Robertson likely to make the bench after they returned to the club at the start of the week. There is also a chance Virgil van Dijk could see the pitch for a second half cameo as the star defender continues to rehabilitate from his ACL injury.
However, Joe Gomez is not yet ready for live match action, while Liverpool’s internationals who represented Brazil and England at the Copa America and Euros this summer remain on holiday. Including their half-matches against Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart and then their full match against Mainz, Hertha will be the Reds’ fourth opponent.
Hertha, meanwhile, are further along in pre-season having recalled their players at the start of July. Liverpool will be their sixth opponent following warm ups against Schwarz-Rot Neustadt, MSV Neuruppin, Hannover, St. Pauli, and VfB Lubeck. Their season begins August 8th against SV Meppen in the DFB-Pokal before the Bundesliga kicks off a week later.
