The search to replace Gini Wijnaldum’s nearly 4000 minutes of production continues.
It’s too early in preseason to know if Jürgen Klopp plans to fill the hole in midfield with players currently in the squad; however the rumor mill has done a stellar job at linking the Reds to some of the hottest names in the business.
Youri Tielemans, Otávio, Saúl Ñíguez (oh god please), Florian Neuhaus—Reds supporters know the drill by now. Now a shock report out of the left field aka Italy claims that Liverpool have made a formal approach for AC Milan star, Franck Kessié.
Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the all-action midfielder is out of contract next summer and the Reds are among a host of European clubs, including the likes of Spurs and Arsenal, keen on scooping him up before he hits the open market.
The Ivory Coast international, currently away with his country at the summer Olympics, had an excellent 2020-21 campaign, scoring 14 times and laying on six assists.
The 24-year-old’s agent revealed a few months ago that Spurs and Milan crosstown rivals, Inter have also registered formal interest and would presumably compete with the Reds for the rangy box-to-box midfielder if Michael Edwards has in fact made a move.
One encouraging aspect of these and other rumors are that the players being linked to Anfield are of a high caliber.
