Yes, Gini Wijnaldum is now an ex-Red—or at least he will be once his contract formally expires at the end of June. Liverpool supporters have generally known long and short of the situation: the club servant wanted to more money in a new deal than owners FSG were willing to pay.

However, the Netherlands international, who is preparing to captain his country in the Euro 2020, has revealed that there is more to the story:

“There are many [Liverpool] supporters who ask me why I didn’t just accept the offer from Liverpool to extend my contract,” the 30-year-old said speaking to Voetbal International.

“But of course, it’s not just that. It’s about much more than that.

“There are things happening behind the scenes that you cannot influence as a player. I will explain that after the tournament because now only Orange [Netherlands] counts.

“What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the staff of the club, and my fellow players would have liked to keep me. I did tell them a bit more. After that, they understood my decision completely. That is important to me.”

Of course, now none of us is able to enjoy the Euros anymore as we’ll be too preoccupied with the new twist in a saga that we thought had come to a bittersweet but conclusive end.
