LIVERPOOL FC VS ATLETICO MADRID
| Wednesday, November 3rd |
Champions League | Anfield
8PM BST/3PM EST
Liverpool, having won their three opening matches, have put themselves firmly in the driver’s seat in Group B. As such, the Reds can qualify for the next round tonight, or even possibly win the group, with two games to spare.
If my math is correct, here are the scenarios that could put Liverpool through tonight:
- Liverpool Win - Win and they’re in! A win would put the Reds 8 points clear of Atletico with two matches to play.
- Liverpool Win + Porto Draw/Loss - Liverpool top the group. We’ll be 8 points clear of Atletico and a minimum of 7 points clear of Porto with 2 matches to play.
- Liverpool Draw + Porto Draw/Loss - Liverpool qualify for the next round. The Reds maintain their 5 (or 6) point advantage over both Atletico and Porto, and because they still have to play each other, only one team could possibly finish above Liverpool.
It is also worth nothing that if Liverpool draw tonight, but Porto win, Liverpool would still only need a draw in Matchday 5 against Porto to win the group, irrespective of other results. This is all to say that Liverpool are very, very likely to qualify, and probably with 1-2 games to spare.
All of that said, let’s absolutely smash ‘em tonight and send Diego Simeone back to Spain with his tail tucked between his legs. We let the other teams fight it out for the last spot, which hopefully won’t be any of our business after tonight.
