Dejan Lovren is enjoying his post-Liverpool life.
The long-serving Reds defender has won a trophy with his new team less than a fortnight after bidding Anfield adieu, winning the Russian Super Cup with Zenit St. Petersburg. Goals from Artem Dzyuba and Magomed Ozdoyev were enough as Lovren played the full 90 minutes to help his new side weather a late onslaught, including a goal from ex-Tottenham defender Verdan Corluka, to win the first competition of the Russian 2020-21 season.
It became the Croatian international’s 2nd trophy lift in the span of a month following the Premier League title win with Liverpool.
The 31-year-old shared a picture of the trophy on Instagram with the caption “First game, first title. Well done boys.” Former Liverpool teammates Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino supported the ex-Red by congratulating his achievement in the comments section.
A rollercoaster six years stint on Merseyside saw Lovren reach the highs of winning a Champions League and scoring the winning goal against Borussia Dortmund in one of the greatest ever Anfield European nights, to the lows of falling to fourth choice center back in Jürgen Klopp’s squad in recent months.
Though well-liked within the squad, the time had come to move on, and it appears that the £11m transfer to new pastures has at least worked out for Lovren.
