One of the bright points in the golden haze of post-League games was watching the Academy players make a mark on the team and on the season. Both Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones recently signed new five year deals with the club after excellent performances, and it looks like Neco Williams will be the next Academy player to receive a new contract from the club.
Williams made six appearances in the club’s nine post-lockdown games, and his talent was pretty apparent throughout. The 19-year-old defender earned his Premier League medal and the continued backing of the coaching staff as he looks for more minutes in the coming season.
“Full-backs now are more attacking and at a club like Liverpool, with the way the boss wants us to play, have to be able to attack, so it’s a massive opportunity for me,” Williams told the The Liverpool Echo last month.
“When I was in the Academy and training with the U23s I was staying back for 10 minutes after training, most days, and just working on my crossing. I’d try crossing from different positions to work on my technique. I’d do this most days a week and keep practising so I could master it because, for me, an assist is just as important as a goal.”
It goes without saying that Williams is one to watch. Having a versatile player like him adding depth to an already incredible team is an incredibly promising sign for the upcoming season.
