Adebayo Akinfenwa made news earlier this summer when he strolled into training with his team Wycombe Wanderers wearing a Liverpool kit after the Reds won the Premier League title. Akinfenwa, a huge Liverpool fan, was unrepentant about the little rule breaking, and promised to happily pay the fine levied on him.

Later, he revealed that his manager vowed to halve the fine should Wycombe succeed in being promoted to the Championship for the first time in their club’s history. On Monday night, they achieved that goal, so presumably Akinfenwa got the reduced fine.

“To be fair the gaffer told me he would halve my fine if we got promoted but I’d be so happy if we went up, I’ll still gladly pay the full amount. It would be money well spent,” he insisted.

“It’s crazy because in my mind I’ve visualised Liverpool doing what they’ve done and winning the Premier League and then on a personal note, us getting promoted to the Championship.

“It would be a very good middle to 2020 for me because this year has been kind of different.”

More importantly, in an interview after their success, Akinfenwa said that there was only one person he had any interest in talking to on WhatsApp: Jürgen Klopp.

“The only person who can WhatsApp me tonight is Klopp,” he told Sky Sports. “So we can celebrate together.”

Lo and behold, Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and others saw the shout out and encouraged their boss to send Akinfenwa a message congratulating him on his victory.

If you’re interested in watching the video as well as Akinfenwa’s reaction to it, he posted a video of himself watching it to Twitter, along with a jubilant response.

He wrote: “Are u crazyyyyyyy the man, the myth, the legend sent me a Watsapp. Today can’t get any better. Thank you Klopp.”
