When Liverpool won their fifth European trophy during the 2004-2005 season, the famous call for Steven Gerrard’s decisive net-busting goal against Olympiakos brought the phrase, “Oh, you beauty!” into the Liverpool lexicon.
Some 15 years later, when they snapped up their sixth victory, Liverpool’s own faithful match commentator surely claimed himself the call of the tournament.
Thursday marks the one year anniversary of Liverpool’s incredible comeback at Anfield to beat Barcelona and secure a place in the Champions League final.
“Corner taken quickly...Origi!” has become a meme, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick thinking and Divock Origi’s tidy finish encapsulating that whole Champions League campaign in seconds.
Steve Hunter is the man behind the meme, and he’s been been in the box commentating on Liverpool games for the past 28 years.
The official site interviewed him about his life and his path to becoming the voice of Liverpool matches, as well as that incredible game.
“It was just an incredible night, probably for me in terms of my job the second-best night commentating on Liverpool of all time, but Anfield is all about creating these moments,” Hunter said.
“I do get a lot of people shouting that to me, especially when I was fortunate to travel on the US tour last summer, but it’s incredible, to be honest, and it’s hard to put into words. I just grin and get a bit emotional when they say that.
“Having commentated on Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Academy when he was just 15, to witness that moment was something else. He is a fantastic lad and he deserves every moment of what he is achieving.
“It was just a special, special night and going on to win No.6 made it incredible.”
Reminiscing about past victories is cold comfort when the Reds are a mere two wins away from making history again, but getting to know more about the man behind that familiar voice was interesting.
