Markus Babbel was one of the most decorated fullbacks in the game when he decided to leave Bayern Munich in the summer of 2000. Babbel had just come off a very disappointing EUROs with Germany, where they finished lasted in their group. He needed a new challenge. He wanted to play in England before finishing his career.
This week on The Kopite podcast, Markus reveals how he chose Liverpool over Manchester United.
“Of course, Bayern Munich is a massive club, not just in Germany but worldwide.” Babbel said. “Still I said ‘I have to change something’, and I had the chance to move to Manchester United, but I didn’t do it because I didn’t have the right feeling.
“I had talks with Liverpool, all the meetings that we had I always got a better and better feeling, and then it was always an easy decision to say ‘yes, I want to play for this unbelievable club’.
“In the end, I did everything right.”
Babbel would play for Liverpool for two seasons, helping the Reds win A Treble in 2000-01.
