LIVERPOOL VS ATLETICO MADRID
| Wednesday, March 11th |
Champions League | Anfield
8PM GMT/4PM EDT
For the third time under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool find themselves returning to Anfield for a decisive second leg after a defeat in Spain. The Reds were able to overturn the previous two deficits—to Villarreal in the Europa League semifinal, and Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal—but of past triumphs are no guarantee of future success. Klopp & Co. face a unique challenge in Atletico Madrid tonight. Diego Simeone has proven time and time again a certain nous for navigating through Europe, and his lads will be prepared for a fight. Anfield and the players will have to be at their best if they hope to go through.
Liverpool have 90 minutes to overturn the one-goal deficit. Like with Barcelona last year, a single goal for the visitors could doom Liverpool to an early exit. A 1-0 scoreline would be enough to force extra time and perhaps pens. But a 2-1 (or 3-2, etc) would mean the end of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign, and would be the first time a Klopp Liverpool side has lost a two-legged European tie. Hopefully Kloppo can correctly calibrate the squad with enough attacking intensity to threaten Atletico, while also providing a solid defensive base. Either that, or just run them out of the stadium, like the 2017/18 side.
