Despite prior evidence to the contrary, it does appear that Kai Havertz to Liverpool is in fact a rumor of some substance. Whether a €125m bid has already been lodged or if it will be forthcoming in the summer—as even current employers Bayer Leverkeusen appear to expect—the German starlet can definitively said to be on Liverpool’s radar.

While it’s his technical gifts and stylistic fit that would seem to make the 20-year-old an excellent addition to Liverpool’s world class squad, Havertz has yet to hit the heights of a breakout 2018-19 season, seeming to suffer with the loss of fellow star Julian Brandt to Borussia Dortmund.

Seven goals and two assists across all competitions so far this term coming after a 20-goal, seven-assist haul last time out have raised doubts over the lofty valuation both home and abroad.

However in what the narrative would deem a conveniently-timed response to the news of a potential bid, the German international made a strong showing in yesterday’s Europa League clash with Porto, scoring on a penalty and going close with an effort of the crossbar. The goal, his side’s second of the night, proved crucial as the visitors scored a goal of their own late to leave the German side with a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg.

And so, while Kai Havertz is not yet a Liverpool player, Red supporters will be hoping that the youngster labelled in German media as an alleskönner—a player who can do everything—will use the close season to show that he is an investment worth making.
