The former Liverpool playmaker says he has no regrets about leaving despite Liverpool’s success.

Philippe Coutinho burned his bridges with Liverpool Football Club when he forced his way out of the club for a chance to play with Barcelona. He claimed that he left to win trophies, but then was part of the team that got dramatically kicked out of the Champions League by Liverpool last season.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, he was asked about Liverpool’s record breaking success, and the player lovingly nicknamed The Magician by the Liverpool faithful had nothing but good things to say about his former club.

“Liverpool is flying,” Coutinho said, “and it doesn’t surprise me. We’ve seen it already last year when it won the Champions League, but I’m also not surprised because of their fantastic squad and manager.

“I am so happy for them, because I have so many friends there, former teammates–so I’m just so happy for them–but that’s all. I don’t look back. I took another path, and now I am on another journey, much like everyone else. I’m focused entirely–just like them–on reaching my dreams. I’m happy with what I did in the past, and now I can only look forward.”

Coutinho’s departure was a big part of what made Liverpool the team they are today. They were able to use the huge transfer fee they wheedled out of Barcelona to fund a much-needed re-vamp of the team’s defense.

The Brazilian’s future is up in the air right now, but despite what gossip-mongers posit, a return to Merseyside won’t be on the cards.
