Liverpool 2 - 1 Sheffield United
Liverpool: Firmino 40’, Jota 63’
Sheffield United: Berge 13’ (pen)
Liverpool welcome back Alisson to the team and Anfield welcomes the team back home after nearly a month playing away.
It’s a good start from Liverpool, completely undone by a ludicrous VAR decision. Sheffield United get awarded a penalty on a Fabinho tackle that was 50/50 at best and just barely on the line. Sander Berge converts it, and Sheffield are up 1-0 in the 16th minute.
I muted my Twitter timeline like crazy after the injustice of the Merseyside derby, and if this score line ends this way, I may have to do it again.
The goal seemed to energize Sheffield and deflate Liverpool, because it’s the visitors who have looked more threatening in the minutes following the opening goal. Oliver McBurnie shoots just wide of the goal on a break, and moments later, Berge has his shot blocked.
This match so far has been vintage Liverpool in a very not good way. It’s painful to watch them struggle against a team who aren’t doing anything special but are still making containing Liverpool look easy.
GOALLLL! 40’ Firmino — Bobby nabs his first goal this season when we need him the most. I dare Andre Marriner to find a reason to disallow that. Henderson crosses to Mané, whose header is batted away from the goal, right to Firmino’s feet.
And now we look more alive. The Reds nearly get in again. Salah gets clean through, but his shot is blocked. The offside flag was likely a relief to the Egyptian there.
The teams head down the tunnel with one goal a piece.
Sheffield get an early first chance in the second half. George Baldock gets off a long range shot that nicks a Liverpool player and goes out for a corner. It takes several seconds to finally clear the ball of danger.
Salah engineers a good opportunity for himself, but his left-footed shot goes well over the bar.
Later on, Salah is denied a gorgeous 101st Liverpool goal, because maybe he breathed offside? I’m not sure.
GOALLL!!! 63’ - Jota - Thankfully, minutes later, the new boy Diogo Jota saves Liverpool and helps Liverpool retake the lead. It was Mané with the lovely cross into the box, and Jota heads it home.
Liverpool giving the Blades far too much room to find their equalizer here. Salah hits the woodwork, to continue his frustrating evening at Anfield. Two beautiful goals stolen from him tonight, but somehow Liverpool still lead.
Burke gets a good chance for Sheffield, but his shot into the top corner thankfully ends up well wide of Alisson’s goal.
Liverpool nearly pull it out, but make the job seem much more difficult than it should.
