Liverpool are headed into their fourth competitive match of the season and second in the Premier League with a bit of an injury problem. As the transfer window wound to a close, most people looked at the squad and would understandably have worried that we were a bit thin at fullback and perhaps in the attack. Since the start of the season, though, an unforeseen problem area has surfaced.

First, Alisson Becker went down with a non-contact calf injury during the first half of the Premier League opener. Then, Adrian, Alisson’s replacement, was injured due to a fan running onto the pitch to celebrate with the club. His status ahead of Saturday’s match, now, is a bit uncertain. Cue the throwing of things and a loud, continuous stream of expletives screamed into the void.

No fan would have thought, at the start of the season, that the area of concern in this squad would be goalkeeper and, yet, here we are. Thankfully, Adrián himself has taken to the official site to help allay some fears. It appears that, at the moment, the back up and Super Cup hero feels that he will likely be fit to start in Saturday’s match against Southampton.

While that news is most certainly a welcome relief from the anxiety I’ve been feeling so early in my day here in sunny California, the next bit of news is most certainly a bit unwelcome. It appears that, as yet, Naby Keita is not fit with no firm timeline or detail given about his injury. Speaking during his pre-Southampton press conference, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that The Admiral would not be part of the weekend plans.

“[Naby] is not available. It’s a muscle thing and we don’t know exactly how long it will take. But he’s not available.”

So, a little bit of good and a little bit of bad in today’s injury update. Hopefully Adrián is in fact only carrying a small injury and will be ready to go for the weekend. As for Naby, the only hope is that he is able to gain full fitness and put his recent injury issues in his past.
