It wasn’t too long ago that Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher hung up their playing boots for Liverpool Football Club. And immediately after, people began wondering who would be next to emerge from Liverpool’s youth system. Because the hallmark of both players was how they were crafted out of Melwood. With both being Scouser themselves, they also held an added connection to the local community. Local lads come good.

The success and ascent of Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Scouser who grew up in and around Liverpool Football Club, has been one of the greatest treats for fans. And for those who were hopeful to have another local lad come through and shine on the big stage, he’s been a special story.

Seemingly quickly on Trent’s heels, though, is one Curtis Jones. The young player has seen playing time all over the pitch, at times having played as an attacker, a midfielder, and a fullback in various appearances. He’s also already made his senior debut and been named to the first team bench. Jones is clearly one that the entire braintrust at Liverpool strongly believe in.

Which is why it’s no surprise that today, Liverpool have announced that Jones has signed a new, long-term contract to continue his development at Liverpool. Jones is clearly entrusted by the front office staff to do well and many fans already know he’s one of the youth players - along with Ben Woodburn - who are on the bubble of potentially making the full move into the first team picture.

Jones joining TAA in the first team would obviously be a joy to local fans and based on his comments, Jones is both aware of the meaning and relishes the opportunity to represent his local club.

“For me, it’s massive. Being a local lad, my dream is to play for this amazing club. To see that the manager and staff have got the belief in me and have offered me a new contract, I’m absolutely buzzing. At the point I’m at now in my career I think it’s very important to take decisions slowly. But this one was easy and straightforward. I’m happy to put pen to paper and I’m ready to kick on from here.”

Jones work to this point has been largely positive and I’m sure most fans will be hopeful that he can come good and make a massive impact on the first team. Perhaps helping a new generation of fans mark a local duo of Reds to call their heroes.
