Liverpool have not had a pre-season that sparks the imagination and gets one excited about the coming season. The team has looked listless and lacking the spark seen in their extraordinary campaign last season that ended with a sixth European title.
Much of that is due to the absence of key players in the squad, players who returned on Monday to join the team in the final push for fitness.
Despite their recent 3-0 loss to Napoli in their friendly played in Scotland, star Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes that the Reds have no huge concerns for the coming season.
“It was quite sloppy at times, but there’s no concerns from my point of view,” he added. Our season starts properly next Sunday, so our focus will be on that. Everyone knows the players who are missing are important players for us. That’s a fact. There’s plenty more to come from the team. There’s a reason why we are European champions. We have to stay calm, we want to win games.
“But we have to be at our top level (on Sunday). If we play like that, we won’t win the Community Shield, it’s as simple as that. We have a good week to prepare ourselves with a friendly as well, which is good for the boys who are coming back. We will definitely be ready for City.”
The team is headed for Evian where they’ll have a week to train, including playing another friendly against Lyon, before battling it out for the Community Shield on Sunday.
