How important is the Community Shield to us?

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on the importance of the Community Shield to Liverpool with respect to the team, the players, the fans, and Premier League fans in general.

My understanding/interpretation is the Community Shield is not an official trophy. It is technically the equivalent of, say, the Spanish Supercup or the Italian Supercoppa, but it does not count towards a club's official trophy haul. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

In that sense, is the Community Shield essentially just a glorified extension of the preseason? Obviously there is some significance in that we are playing against one of our great domestic rivals but there isn't really a huge impact if we win or lose this game.

As a Liverpool fan, I won't be too disappointed if we lose this game (provided it isn't a drubbing), and conversely I won't get too ahead of myself if we win. I am curious as to how other Liverpool fans are viewing this game?

I also was hoping to have a discussion about how the players might be seeing this game. I'm sure they want to win, but would a loss affect them in a manner that could impact their first few games of the PL season?
