Liverpool are now solidly into their pre-season, with Sevilla in Boston representing the half-way point of their preparations for the 2019-20 season and the majority of the squad having now seen action. It may not be a full strength squad tonight—Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino, and Alisson remain on their summer breaks and Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri are missing though injury—but it should be a strong one, with many first team stars expected to play an hour of football.

It will also be a chance for Liverpool to perhaps change things around in Boston, a regular destination what with having Fenway Sports Group as owners but a place where their pre-season record in past seasons hasn’t been good. They’ll be facing a Sevilla side that finished in sixth in La Liga last season and has been busy in the transfer market, splashing €25M on Bordeaux defender Jules Koundé, and €15M each on four others—winger Lucas Ocampos, forward Munas Dabbur, midfielder Joan Jordán, and defender Diego Carlos.

In fact, Sevilla have already signed eleven new players for €125M while seeing five—most notably Pablo Sarabia, Quincy Promes, and Luis Muriel—depart, recouping €50M. We know that last season’s Sevilla wasn’t at their best, and we know they’ve made a lot of changes in an effort to push back up the La Liga table—though it’s far too early to say how that’s going to work out. So far they’ve won all three of their pre-season friendlies, narrowly beating Tanzania’s Simba SC 4-3 before getting past Reading 2-1 and dispatching FC Dallas 3-1.
