The stars were out at Anfield on Saturday when several familiar faces returned to play in the annual Legends charity event during the international break. The match, always fun and eventful, gives fans plenty of football and shenanigans to enjoy, while bringing out the nostalgia full force.
Saturday’s game included Liverpool superstars such as Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger, Robbie Fowler, and Jamie Carragher. Their opponents, AC Milan legends, were no slouches either, with players like Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Paolo Maldini, Cafu and Alessandro Nesta all representing the Italian giants. The proceeds for the night go to the LFC Foundation.
Nothing thrills a Liverpool fan more than seeing God score, and Fowler didn’t disappoint. He opened up the scoring, getting a good volley with the outside edge of his left foot to just slide it past the keeper.
Cisse made it 2-0 as the second half began, and it looked like the Liverpool Legends were going to run away with it in the last 45’.
But then, who else? Andrea Pirlo came through for Milan, scoring a classic 25-yard stunner to get the Italians back in the game. Then Pancaro hit a second goal for Milan, and it was all tied up at two all at Anfield.
But with the seconds slowly ticking away, it was Captain Fantastic, Steven Gerrard, who gave the Reds the victory, right in front of the Kop. A Gerrard special has him jinxing about at the edge of the penalty area before finally getting the ball where he needed it and slotting it home at the far post. Cue the cheering, cue the feels.
Tonight, friends, we all party like it’s 2009.
