Ex-Red Claims Coutinho Wouldn’t Be Welcome at Anfield

Danny Murphy thinks the Brazilian has burned that bridge.

Ex-Liverpool player Danny Murphy gave an interview with Sportingbet about the title challenge, and Liverpool’s attempts to win that elusive number 19. You can read the whole thing here, but the most interesting bit was his answer about Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho’s floundering performances at Barcelona have caused rumours to swirl that there may be a return to Merseyside in his future. However, Murphy was quick to douse that fire, suggesting that the Brazilian playmaker would not be welcomed by the Anfield faithful after the tricks he pulled to secure himself a move away.

“Coutinho would never be welcomed back at Liverpool,” he answered. “It hasn’t worked out for him at Barcelona, but he made his bed by declaring how much he wanted to leave and now he has to sleep in it. I think even if Liverpool thought it was something they wanted, the fans would make it perfectly clear it wasn’t acceptable and would force them to pull the plug. The fans didn’t necessarily begrudge him his move to Barcelona, but he left himself no way to come back.”

This is one of the dumbest rumours the gossip mill has churned out recently, from your humble writer’s perspective. That bridge was pretty well burnt by the end of Coutinho’s tenure last January, and it is very unlikely that he’d find his way back.

Still, the would you/wouldn’t you debate will probably continue throughout the summer, so: would you or wouldn’t you?
