If Bayer Leverkeusen starlet Kai Havertz is part of Jürgen Klopp’s vision for the future of Liverpool, then the Reds manager will certainly be in a dogfight. A host of Europe’s top clubs and Manchester United are already in hot pursuit of the 20-year-old and are now set to be joined in the race by none of than Manchester City.
Bild reports that the talented German find himself part of the Premier League champions’ plan to rebuild a squad aging in key areas, pitting the Citizens against their rivals in Liverpool. Klopp, too is said to be interested in the next generation of his Reds side; indeed as one of the factors at play in the 52-year-old’s recent extension at the club was the owners’ commitment to backing a refresh of the squad when new blood is eventually needed.
He could find that commitment tested as the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid as well as Tottenham and Chelsea are said to have registered their interest as well. Furthermore, Havertz himself is reported only last month to have admitted that he “couldn’t go wrong with Bayern Munich,” if push came to shove meaning that the competition will most assuredly be quite stiff.
Rather than a January scrum however, Sky Sports understands that the youngster will seek to wait until the summer to decide on his next destination.
Havertz scored 20 goals last season as Leverkusen qualified for the Champions League with a fourth place Bundesliga finish. He hasn’t quite hit the same heights this term, as niggling injuries have led to a stop-start campaign thus far.
