Liverpool FC’s squad is one of the best in world football. We know that not just by the Champions League trophy we’ve added to the collection or the UEFA Super Cup trophy we’ve just banked, but also because our players are being recognized for individual accolades.
Tonight, France Football announced in a 3+ hour event, their shortlist for various awards. Now, you may know them as being the people who award the Ballon d’Or, roundly recognized as world football’s consensus footballer of the year award. And, to that end, Liverpool’s squad have a lot to be proud of as they received 7 entrants onto the coveted shortlist for the sport’s biggest individual honor.
Now, we’ve got an article that already covers who from Liverpool received that call, but among them is one that is of no surprise: Brazilian goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. Alisson was the league’s best keeper last season and, likely, the best in the world. As such, his being named to the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or isn’t all that surprising.
However, France Football have expanded their list of awards this year and have decided to include one specifically for goalkeepers. The Yashin Trophy, named for legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin, will be awarded to the sport’s best net minder by the folks at France Football. And in its inaugural run, Alisson Becker is a finalist.
Joining the Brazilian are Manuel Neuer, Ederson, Andre Onana, Wojciech Szczesny, Jan Oblak, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Samir Handanovic, Hugo Lloris and Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Quite the collection of keeper’s there. Still, one has to like the chances of Alisson keeping hold of this prize. Not only because his hands are solid, but because he’s managed to bring home the Premier League Golden Glove and the FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year award. Here’s hoping he hangs on to win the Yashin.
