Liverpool supporters were holding their breath earlier today when star Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino was subbed off after Jan Vertonghen gouged his eye in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham.
“I’m not sure, but maybe we have an injury with Roberto,” Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp said of the injury after the match. “I don’t know exactly at the moment, but it’s something with his eye. It was a free-kick for Tottenham, right? Funny. I haven’t seen it back, I only saw the situation from 60 yards away so I’ve no clue what exactly happened. But it’s something with the eye and for sure at the moment it’s not comfortable for him. But we will see.”
(NSFW Disclaimer: The injury initially seemed pretty gruesome, if you wish to see what it looked like, feel free to look here.)
A few hours after the final whistle, Firmino posted to his personal Instagram that the injury was, “just a scare, my eye is ok and so am I.” So, the Reds can exhale ahead of their Champions’ League clash with Paris St. Germain on Tuesday night, when Kylian Mbappe and Neymar come to Anfield.
And according to a statement from the club released shortly after Firmino’s own, the striker underwent an exam at the hospital which “confirmed an abrasion of the eye” that would leave “no lasting damage.”
