Thanks to goal differential and with the help of three clean sheets, Liverpool end the month of August top of the Premier League table as one of the four clubs with perfect records. It’s a good place to be. At least for a start.
With just three matches in August, though, it means there hasn’t been a lot of game action to go off of when it comes to choosing Liverpool’s Player of the Month. Still, we work with what we’ve got, and August did see its standouts.
Looking at Man of the Match voting for August’s games and giving players five points for being named Man of the Match through to one for finishing fifth in voting gets us a short-list of candidates for Player of the Month.
James Milner leads the way this time with nine points, followed by Naby Keïta with seven and Virgil van Dijk with six. Each of that trio was named Man of the Match once, and it’s fair to say they’re worthy favourites.
The Milner renaissance has continued, the player carrying over his stellar late-season form from 2017-18; Keïta has made an instant impact adding dynamism to the midfield; and Van Dijk has been key to those clean sheets.
Rounding things out this month is Alisson (also on six points) and then Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Gini Wijnaldum (four each). Of note is that no player finished in the top five in voting in all three of August’s matches.
Now, just as you decided who should be Man of the Match after each game, we want you to pick who the Player of the Month is.
