Deadline Day in England has come and gone but the deadline days on the continent aren’t quite passed. Today is deadline day in Italy and with that comes official news from the club that Estonian defender and quietly capable back-up Ragnar Klavan has just completed a permanent transfer to Italian side Cagliari.

There wasn’t a price affixed to the official announcement from the club, but £2 million is a number that’s been reported by the trustworthy Melissa Reddy. That amounts to a rather fair appraisal for the defender 32 year-old defender.

Entering this season, Klavan had 39 appearances for Liverpool FC to his name along with a game winner scored just this past May against Burnley. However, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez back to full-health, and with Dejan Lovren slated as the prohibitive number 2 on the depth chart once he returns from injury, Klavan must have seen that his chances at seeing the pitch were indeed numbered. In fact it was Gomez who earned the call-up and performed superbly last weekend, making it highly likely that his continued growth and projection places him as duking it out with Matip for that spot right behind Lovren on the depth chart.

Klavan himself has performed capably when called up during his tenure at Anfield. Never the fleetest of foot, he provided a steady presence and used his experience and grift to provide the necessary cover for when Liverpool’s center back situation got dicey.

But all of that is in the past with centerback depth whose lightness on experience is counterbalanced by quality.

All of us here wish Ragnar all the best in Italy, where we hope he joins Lucas, Suso, and Luis Alberto for former LFC Player board game night.
