Preseason has officially begun for Liverpool, including the ladies side of the club. It appears the club is hard at work to rebuild after the mass exodus of a few months ago and have made moves to replenish their squad.
Earlier this week Liverpool Ladies announced two signings from Bristol City in Belgian winger Yana Daniels and defender Jasmine Matthews. Daniels came through the youth setup at Oud-Heverlee Leuven before spending time at Lierse, FC Twente and Anderlecht before her move to Bristol. Daniels, who can also play as a striker, spent a year with Bristol City most recently.
“Once I heard of the interest from Liverpool Ladies, there was only one Club that I wanted to sign for and I cannot wait to get started,” Daniels said of her signing. “This is a great move for me and I am really looking forward to working alongside Neil (Redfearn) and the players. The squad here has big potential and I am really confident that we will have a successful season this year.”
Jasmine Matthews comes to the club having spent her entire career with Bristol, coming through their academy setup before signing a senior contract. Named their Players’ Player of the Season for 2017-2018, Matthews can also play in midfield, should the Reds need it. (And they do).
“I have spent my whole career at Bristol City Women so this was a big decision for me to make but once I heard about the interest from Liverpool Ladies it was a no brainer. It is a fantastic club with real ambitions to challenge for trophies so I am really excited for the future,” Matthews said upon her signing.
While two new signings is exciting, this brings the team total up to 13 players. There is still a long way to go to get this team ready for their first match, considering they can’t even field a full squad at this point. The ladies have begun their preseason training, but their first preseason match against Manchester United Women’s is coming quickly and it’s hard to believe they’ll be anywhere near ready to face Casey Stoney’s women.
