Liverpool have bigger things to worry about than the 3-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in Charlotte, North Carolina this Sunday. Joël Matip, who only made 35 appearances in all of Liverpool’s campaign last season, suffered yet another thigh injury 20 minutes into the game. He was immediately replaced by Joe Gomez, and while Matip will definitely not appear for the Reds for the rest of the International Champions Cup, Jürgen Klopp is hopeful the injury is a minor one.

“It’s not the same injury [as the one he suffered last season]”, Klopp said during the post-match conference. “It’s another muscle – it looks like, hopefully, only a little tear.”

A small tear is still far more serious than Liverpool can afford and would likely mean Matip is out for the rest of pre-season. The Reds’ medical team has still not determined how severe the injury is, however, and Klopp was unwilling to speculate any further.

“We will see, but we cannot say anymore about it now. It is of course the most negative thing about the day. It’s not cool. Things like this can happen, but you don’t want them to.

“Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will know more, but in this moment we only know that it was too painful for him to carry on.”

Matip missed a large part of Liverpool’s 2017/18 season after suffering a thigh injury in January, and then being sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing thigh surgery in April. We’ll have to wait to see what this new injury means for the coming season.
