Jürgen Klopp and his merry band of gegenpressers are on their way to the US to participate in the International Champions Cup, for preseason friendlies against Borussia Dortmund, and Manchesters City and United.
A 29-man roster was announced for the trip. Like other preseason friendlies so far, the squad includes quite a few fringe and youth players. However, one player who will stay back in Melwood is Danny Ings, who is currently recovering from some small knocks (or, perhaps, to be sold on at a moment’s notice). Other possible want-away strikers—Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi—are both making the trip, as is surprise preseason goalscorer Lazar Markovic.
Additionally, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and newboy Xherdan Shaqiri will fill out the remaining spots, but are not likely to feature prior to the last match against Manchester United in Ann Arbor. The tour will be over before the Brazilian continent—Roberto Firmino and Alisson—can join up, and well before the World Cup semifinalists and finalists, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Dejan Lovren.
The Reds will start their International Champions Cup campaign against Kloppo’s old side, Dortmund, on Sunday, 9:05 PM BST, 4:05 PM EST. Dortmund already ran out 1-0 winners against Liverpool’s domestic foe Manchester City.
The full squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Loris Karius, Kamil Grabara, and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Defenders: Nathaniel Clyne, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip, Alberto Moreno, Andy Robertson, and Nathaniel Phillips.
Midfielders: Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita, Marko Grujic, Adam Lallana, Curtis Jones, Lazar Markovic, Ben Woodburn, and Pedro Chirivella.
Forwards: Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge, Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi, Dominic Solanke, Rafael Camacho, and Sheyi Ojo.
