Lost amidst the news of a particular, much anticipated transfer, and even buried within the news of Ovie Ejaria’s own move - in the form of a loan - to Rangers, is that Steven Gerrard is bringing three coaches from Liverpool FC’s academy set up with him to Glasgow. Joining Ejaria, Gary McAllister, and Gerrard as the Liverpool contingent at Rangers are youth coaches Michael Beale, Tom Culshaw, and Jordan Milsom.
Reds may be familiar with Michael Beale, who was the U-23 coach before taking a spell in December of 2016 to coach at Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, his tenure there was short and Beale found his way back to the Liverpool fold at the start of this past league campaign, taking up a role overseeing the U-5 through U-11 teams under Alex Inglethorpe’s academy set up.
Culshaw and Milsom were a bit more hidden in LFC’s academy set up. Milsom was the strength and rehab coach at Melwood. Culshaw, meanwhile, was Gerrard’s assistant for the U-18’s last season. And, according to this article from the official site, actually grew up alongside Steven Gerrard as a former Liverpool Academy product himself. Going all the way back to their days in Huyton, Culshaw and Gerrard were side-by-side through most of their careers. Bringing him on as his assistant at the U-18s and with him to Rangers feels natural and it appears Gerrard relishes having voices around him that he trusts.
In the end, we wish the entire Liverpool contingent at Rangers well. Here’s hoping that Ejaria, especially, is able to find success and form that will translate to pushing one of the talented players currently ahead of him into a real challenge for a place in the first team.
