Chelsea 1, Liverpool 0: First Thoughts

Heavy metal football has finally taken it’s toll on Liverpool in a dismal afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

  • Pre-Match: Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to the midfield today after a not great showing against Stoke, so we’ll see if he’s able to break the lines like we really need him to. On the upside, it means Clyne is getting sorely needed minutes so, cool? That’s the only major change to the lineup from Wednesday and Saturday to think about!
  • And away we go!
  • Play has been mostly stuck in the middle of the pitch for the first ten minutes, with Liverpool having a couple chances to break through but Chelsea have been stripping the Reds pretty easily - unfortunately.
  • Sadio Mane goes on the counterattack only to have Kante take him out just outside the box. It looked rough, that’s for sure.
  • Man, it’s a good thing there’s like a two week break between Brighton and the Champions League final because uh, this team looks tired.
  • Cool, James Milner limping around is just what we need. Not even half an hour in. Cool cool cool. At least Hendo is on the bench??
  • Yeah, uh. There’s not a whole lot going on in terms of concentration.
  • ALMOST! Mane gets close after some tricky movements from Roberto Firmino but didn’t put enough power behind it and it’s scooped easily by Courtois.
  • Goal. Olivier Giroud (I know, it’s still weird) sends a header just behind Karius to make it 1-0 for the home side.
  • We can still come back, I think, but I’ve definitely seen better performances this year from the Reds.
  • Oh. Salah earns a yellow card for diving and then Nathaniel Clyne goes in for a nasty tackle and gets a yellow card too. Desperation is not a good look for us.
  • Halftime: The first half was abysmal. This team better get a helluva talking to in the dressing room because I don’t know what we’re gonna need to come back.
  • We’re back! Annnd it looks like more of the same. Cool. At least if we win the Champions League we get a spot? Is that Klopp’s endgame? Just win the Champions League and fuck off the rest?
  • *sings* Nothing else going on, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nothing else going on, yeah, yeah, yeah. Put Hendo in, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeaaaaaah.
  • Chelsea almost put a second back because Karius falls on his backside holding it and it ends up offside because that’s the only help we’re going to get since we can’t help ourselves.
  • FINALLY. 58 minutes in and the Trent in midfield experiment is over for today with Clyne coming off for Jordan Henderson.
  • Andy Robertson is not having a great game today, which is the last thing we need to be honest. There’ve been two almost own goals by him which is two more than anyone wants.
  • Aw, that’s rough. Robertson comes off for Dom Solanke at 74 minutes.
  • ALMOST! A GORGEOUS pass from Hendo goes to waste because Bobby was just short of it.
  • Thank god there’s a week’s break between now and Brighton because, uh, we need it.
  • Liverpool’s last change is to bring Alberto Moreno on for James Milner in the last gasp of the game.
  • Another wasted opportunity as another pass from Hendo gets wasted by some chaos in the box.
  • Hahahahahah at least Courtois got a yellow for time wasting. I thought that was only Migs.
  • Final Whistle: What a waste. Liverpool are completely exhausted and worn thin by Champions League and injuries. We need a rest, desperately.
