In case you’ve not heard, Liverpool Football Club - five time European Cup/Champions League/Big Ears winners - will be facing off against plucky Spanish minnows Real Madrid in the final match of Europe’s premier club competition not too long from now. There’s still the pesky business of one more domestic league fixture remaining for Liverpool, which just happens to have immensely high stakes attached to it. But make no mistake, Kiev is very much on everyone’s minds.
That includes of course, the minds of the folks over in Madrid. You can expect talking heads and club legends on both sides to be asked for their opinions on the Champions League final with increasingly painful frequency in the near future. One such representative - Real Madrid’s Honorary President Francisco “Paco” Gento has already waded into those waters, offering the opinion that the final will be “a piece of cake (Eso está chupado)” for Real Madrid.
To which I say, with respect, “nah bro, your (sic) double chupado.”
And sure, Liverpool are unsurprisingly regarded as underdogs in this contest, perhaps even if you asked the Reds’ own legends and representatives, such as Kenneth “Kenny” Dalglish or Jürgen “Norbert” Klopp. But Real Madrid might be coming off as juuuuust a touch too confident about coming away with yet another Champions League victory. Not that Klopp’s squad is likely to need further motivation for this match, but more statements like those from Paco Gento - which were admittedly made in rather playful fashion - will likely add an additional frisson to the proceedings.
Especially if those comments are conveyed to a certain James “Boring” Milner.
