With Liverpool easing past FC Porto in the Round of 16, many have already started fantasizing about the Reds achieving European glory for a sixth time this season. Under Klopp, the team has looked like the type who could beat anyone on their day. The combination of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino up front is enough to put fear into the hearts of any team in Europe.
One person who feels that optimism is Liverpool legend Terry McDermott. The former Red, who would himself know a thing or two about winning European trophies, spoke with the Echo recently and praised Klopp’s men.
“I know some people will look at it and say ‘he [Klopp] still hasn’t won anything’ but I’m confident that trophies will follow,” he said. “On their day this team can beat anyone, I’m convinced about that.
“The front three are a breath of fresh air. Their pace and skill makes them very difficult to stop. The number of goals they have scored this season has been tremendous. They are always a threat. It means we’re more than capable of going anywhere and scoring an away goal or two.
”It’s been a long time since Liverpool have had big nights in the European Cup at Anfield so it’s been great to see this season. I’ve got a sneaky feeling they are going to make it to Kiev. There’s no reason why we can’t get to the final. If we get the second leg at Anfield then I fancy us to get past anyone.”
The quarterfinal draw will be Friday afternoon, and while some outcomes will be kinder than others, there is a sense that, despite recent hiccups, Klopp’s team is ready to take on anyone.
