Southampton 0, Liverpool 2: Man of the Match

Two first half goals from the usual suspects were enough to secure the points for Liverpool, and now we want you to choose your man of the match.

After last weekend’s disappointing, but ultimately not disastrous, 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, this week offered Liverpool the opportunity to take another solid step towards a top four spot. Southampton started the match in an uncomfortable bottom three position, with Newcastle United having surprised Manchester United earlier in the day, and the hosts would be desperate to avoid dropping points.

The match started off at high tempo from both sides, but Liverpool struck first, courtesy of Roberto Firmino after a flubbed interception by Wesley Hoedt. Southampton bravely chased the game, and had their chances to make Liverpool pay, but it was the visitors who collected the second goal of the match shortly before halftime. Inevitably, it was Mohamed Salah’s left foot doing the job. And that’s how the scoreline stayed.

Now let us know how you saw it. Hitting the thumbs up button is a vote to move the player up the list—or to help keep them on top. Hitting thumbs down is a vote to push that player closer to the bottom. It’s half man of the match poll and half power ranking, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you’d maybe like to see given the next game off.

At the end of the month we’ll go through the results of the month’s polls and vote The Liverpool Offside’s player of the month and, come next May, those monthly results will help to determine your TLO player of the season for 2017-18. Those visiting on Google AMP who wish to vote will have to navigate to the front page and re-enter the story to access the non-AMP version of it.
