After a busy September that saw Liverpool play matches across three competitions, two matches a week, and meet their most challenging opponents in this young season, the team can now take a moment to breathe with the International Break upon us. Which usually also means that the return of wild transfer rumors is in the offing. And, without skipping a beat, our rumor mongers have a fresh transfer sighting for you to behold.
This selection comes from our geruchtenhandelaar in Eindhoven - or, as we know it, rumor mongers. Word out of the Netherlands indicates that Liverpool are currently tracking young, PSV winger Steven Bergwijn. The 21-year old winger has been turning some heads with his play, notching 14 goals since making the move to PSV from rival club Ajax in 2014. A wide attacker is most certainly prized in Jurgen’s system, so the link at least makes some logical sense. And if the reports are to be believed, interest from across the continent from the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham, and Inter Milan, would indicate that he is indeed one to watch.
It must be noted, though, that while wing is a spot that’s lacking in depth should one of Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah go down, it’s not exactly a position built out of a lack of attention, but rather because the quality of available wingers suited to the role is likely rather thin. Add in the fact that Mane and Salah represent elite talent and would walk onto any top team across Europe, it makes it more a fact that their talent likely outshines the serviceable pieces on the squad capable of doing a shift in a pinch. Xherdan Shaqiri is a name that comes to mind as one who can play wide as well as Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain once he returns from injury.
Still, it can’t hurt to be looking at what’s available. We’ll obviously bring you more should this - or any rumor - eventually start to churn their way into being something more.
