Alisson Becker may be every Liverpool fan’s favorite goalkeeping Becker, he’s certainly not the only one. Alisson’s older brother, Muriel Becker, is also a goalkeeper, currently playing at Belenenses, a club in Portugal’s top flight.

When asked about his football heroes, Alisson’s answer is simple. “My great idol in soccer is my brother. I grew up watching him training, playing, but I always liked [Gianluigi] Buffon and Taffarel too.”

“If I’m not playing at the same time as him, I watch his games. He calls me after the games to talk through what happened - and vice-versa, after my games I call him and ask him what he thought of that play, that sequence, that event, whether I could’ve done anything differently.

“We have this relationship of friends and also playing in the same position. I continue to learn a lot from him.”

And it’s not only Muriel and Alisson who wear the goalkeeping gloves in the Becker family.

“I have a family of goalkeepers,” he explained. “My father played for his work team, my mother played handball in school, and my grandfather played in amateur football. And after all this, came my brother playing and then I started to like it, too.

“I started to watch him training and then started feeling passion for the position. It’s in my blood, it’s in my family, so I started to follow them and to play in goal.”

Whatever is in the Becker blood has certainly benefited Liverpool. Alisson has already led the defense to seven clean sheets in his first 13 games with the club. The Reds are 10 games unbeaten in the league and tied at the top of the table with Manchester City. While the whole team is responsible for their excellent record, plenty of the kudos have been bestowed on Alisson’s calm presence between the sticks.

Alisson’s next challenge comes on Saturday when Liverpool head to the Emirates to take on a well-performing Arsenal team. The Gunners have scored 24 goals in the first 10 matches, so keeping them out will be a challenge. No matter how the match turns out, what we know for sure is that Alisson will get a call from his brother after it.
