It wasn’t immediately apparent at the time, but Jordan Henderson’s goal against Leicester City would mark a significant course correction in Liverpool’s recent fortunes. The captain’s effort, after some unselfish work from Daniel Sturridge, ended up being the difference between three points and one. It may also have temporarily steered the discussion away from the continuing defensive issues and towards happier thoughts, such as the chance to make some waves in the Champions League.
Speaking after the victory over Leicester City, Henderson refused to dwell on the growing evidence that this Liverpool side can produce some truly mesmerizing attacking play when it wants, and focused instead on the road ahead.
"We dug in right until the end and showed great character to see the game out,” said the captain. “We can do better but it's still an improvement.”
“I think overall we're delighted with the result in the end as well as the performance and we're looking forward to the next game now.”
If Henderson is correct that this squad can do better, they’ll want to do so sooner rather than later. Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Moscow and a date with an opponent against whom the Reds will be expected to do well.
“We've got a quick turnaround so we'll recover well for a tough game away,” said Henderson. “This will give us good confidence going forward and hopefully we can continue to put in performances and win games.”
