Fernando Torres Cheering For Liverpool from Afar

Liverpool may have just lost the Audi Cup to Atletico Madrid after the 1-1 game went to penalties, but Fernando Torres, currently of Atletico Madrid and formerly of Liverpool, felt the reunion was a touching reminder of what used to be.

“[Playing Liverpool] is always strange and difficult, but it’s exciting at the same time,” El Niño told the official club website after the match. “There are many memories that come into my mind and it is going to be always like this.”

The Audi Cup final marked the end of Liverpool’s training camp in Germany, and the boss is pleased with how Liverpool’s performance (penalty defeat notwithstanding) is shaping up, especially with the Champions League play-off fast approaching.

And Liverpool’s return to the Champions League is exactly what Torres is hoping for.

“It’s really exciting that Liverpool are back in the Champions League and hopefully they can get through in these two games they have to play,” he said. “It’s nice for football in general to have Liverpool back in the Champions League and who knows, we could face each other.”

“They are doing things better. Last season was a very good season with some ups and downs, but I think they showed they can be a great team. They are one more year together and if they can keep all of their players everybody is aware of what they can do and hopefully they can keep on improving and do better than last season.”

Liverpool’s Champions League play-off legs will take place on August 15-16th and 22-23rd.
