Not that you need me to tell you this, but the central figure in this summer’s transfer drama is far-and-away Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender, who has displayed a dynamic combination of brains and brawn during his time with Southampton, is quite possibly the Premier League’s hottest commodity this year. Liverpool are one of a handful of clubs looking to lure him away from the South Coast, and while the competition is fierce and the transfer fee will no doubt be high, there’s a broad consensus that he could be a strong addition to the squad.
But the fee notwithstanding, there are some question marks over van Dijk. The biggest one may be his health. Van Dijk has been out of commission since January after suffering an ankle injury that cut his season short. While it didn’t look serious at the time, any lengthy injury lay-off is going to make potential suitors hesitate, and Liverpool are no exception.
But it looks like those concerns are easing a bit. Van Dijk posted two videos on Instagram in recent days showing him returning to ball work in training and making good progress on his recovery.
If VvD’s recovery is moving along as fast as he’s making it out to be, Liverpool will undoubtedly feel more confident in their pursuit of him.
Now they just have to fend off Manchester City. And Arsenal. And Chelsea. No pressure or anything.
