Joël Matip Picks His LFC Five-a-side Team

The Liverpool defender answers an entertaining fan question.

Joël Matip has no international commitments over the summer, which makes one less candle for me to light in my nightly vigil. So while his teammates are scattered around the globe playing for their countries, Matip had time to do a Q&A for LFC Xtra. The social media account tweeted video of his response to a question about which of his fellow teammates he would pick to play in a five-a-side game.

His first choice is a defender because “normally always defense wins these types of small games.” Then he goes on to pick Dejan Lovren, with the rousing endorsement of “it doesn’t matter, any defender. I would say Dejan.” Yeah, that’s kinda how we feel about him too, Joël.

His next choice is obvious: Coutinho because, as he states, “It’s better to play with him than against him.” Phil seems like he’d be the first player on anyone’s list, and for exactly that reason.

Gini Wijnaldum is picked next for his good passes, among other things, though curiously his magically bright smile isn’t mentioned — a glaring oversight.

Matip’s final choice is captain Jordan Henderson, as “a good midfielder is always not too bad.”

Not sure how I feel about that particular set up. But do you agree with Matip? Who would your current Liverpool five-a-side be? Does new guy Mohamed Salah make the list, or would you stick to players who you already know play well together?
