Liverpool Reject Napoli’s Player Swap Offer For Alberto Moreno

Jürgen Klopp wants a left-back, just not the one they’re offering.

We’re slightly less than a week away from the official opening of the transfer window - July 1st looming ahead of us like a dip in the road. If you hit it just right, you’ll go airborne for a few milliseconds and have some brief joy. If you don’t, you could do some damage. While Liverpool have some “marquee” signings either lined up or already in the bag (hello, Mo), there’s still the matter of players needing to be moved on. Spanish defender Alberto Moreno being one of them.

Our buddy James Pearce at the Echo revealed today that Liverpool have rejected an offer from Napoli of a player swap, after the Reds had rejected their earlier offer of £11 million. Napoli offered up Algerian left-back Faouzi Ghoulam in exchange for Albie and while everyone knows that the left-back position is in dire need of depth, boss Jürgen Klopp made it clear that Ghoulam isn’t the left-back he’s looking for.

Pearce claims that the Reds believe there’s enough interest in Moreno elsewhere that they’d be able to at least get a £15 million cash offer for him. Inter Milan, AC Milan, his former club Sevilla, and two unnamed Premier League clubs have all inquired about the Spaniard, whose been deemed surplus to Liverpool’s requirements.

To his credit, Faouzi Ghoulam made 38 appearances and ten goals in all competitions last year, and has played on the left side his entire career, so he might not be a terrible addition to the team, with Champions League experience under his belt to boot. Also considering that Liverpool are looking to make more record breaking signings this summer, one can’t blame them for trying to make a little profit on their other players. Albie signed to Liverpool three years ago for £12 million from Sevilla and has made 109 appearances and 3 goals in those three years, but was benched much of last season in favor of James Milner in his position.
