Liverpool’s Champions League hopes still remains in the balance, but regardless of whether they succeed in qualifying, they will get a good couple of final warm-ups for European action prior to the season starting.
As we reported on two months ago, Liverpool will play in the pre-season Audi Cup, hosted by fellow five-time European champions and red aficionados Bayern Munich. Now, the Reds and Die Roten will be joined by AC Milan and Atletico Madrid for the two-day, four-team tournament in Allianz Arena, kicking off August 1st.
However, AC Milan only agreed to the tournament on a provisional basis. Our two-time Champions League final foe is currently 6th in Serie A, and therefore may have to contend with Europa League qualification. Although Liverpool would have to contend with a playoff to get into the Champions League if they finish fourth, the scheduling (August 15-16th and August 22-23rd) would not conflict with this tournament.
Considering the short rest between games, it is likely that there would be two completely different Liverpool sides competing on the back-to-back days. Still, it should be a good final warm up against three teams involved in European football, and at a very high level in the cases of Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.
