Apparently. Reportedly. Club-connected journalists. This is all Liverpool fans have to go on until the club actually makes a big move for a player and successfully signs him. Securing a top four spot, however, removes a big obstacle to making a big push in the summer transfer window.
According to the Telegraph's Chris Bascombe, "a record-breaking transfer spree" is finally upon us and dares to bring in names such as Virgil van Dijk, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keïta, Mohamed Salah, and Christian Pulisic. Plenty of potential capitalisation errors, missed umlauts, and spelling errors for the whole Liverpool family to enjoy. Also, there is the prospect of "numerous world-class strikers" like Kylian Mbappé to consider. Yes, Liverpool reportedly want those too in a summer where Andy Carroll will no longer be the club's record signing.
Any player considering coming to Liverpool for just Champions League football, though, has been warned by James Milner: don't disrespect the club. Whether this is a realistic request is unknown at this stage, but Milner certainly has Liverpool's best interests at heart.
“It’s disrespectful to the club if you say the only reason you are going to Liverpool is for Champions League,” said Milner. “With the history, the manager and the players at this club, it’s slightly disrespectful if the only reason you come is that.
“Maybe [the club is more attractive] but it’s one thing saying you are coming to play Champions League and another proving you are good enough to play in it. You have to come here and do the business.”
FSG may be ready to show Jürgen Klopp the money, but any players that are signed have to be ready to get their James Milner on and do the business. Identifying the right players seems to go some way to addressing this as it's unfair to expect Stewart Downing to bring the heat like Sadio Mané.
