Amidst all the drunken revelry, Gini Wijnaldum took a moment to talk about his fantastic goal from earlier today. His strike turned Liverpool from a side that was definitely starting to drive me to drink at 10:00 AM to a side that ...led me to crack open a celebratory drink even before the final whistle was blown.
“I took a chance, to be fair, because normally goalkeepers think you’re going to go for the far post,” Wijnaldum told the club’s official website. “I thought I would try to shoot hard to the other side. I’m lucky that it went in, because it was a chance that I took.”
“Everything is going through your mind at that time. You’re just happy that you scored a goal and helped the team out and made the supporters happy. That’s the only thing you think of.”
While the goal came just before the end of the first half, it kicked off an eleven-minute goal-scoring rout, with Coutinho and Lallana following soon after the second half began.
His goal in the 3-0 victory against Boro is just another in a series of excellent performances by the Dutch national. It’ll be wonderful to keep watching him against Europe’s best.
“It feels great. As a player, you want to play against the best teams in Europe and you can do it in the Champions League,” Wijnaldum added.
“That’s the thing we wanted to do when we saw we couldn’t play for the title anymore. We wanted to play for the Champions League. And we succeeded.”
