Lacazette Rumours Set to End

Liverpool fans should be free of links to the Frenchman, for the next year at least.

Despite having been linked with a potential move to the club for three summers running, no source with direct ties to the club have ever confirmed that Liverpool are in fact interested in Alexandre Lacazette. Certainly, the Frenchman would make a lot of sense for the Reds — and indeed for most clubs — given his 111 goals in all competitions for Lyon since making the move to striker in 2013, but the closest the former winger has ever gotten to Merseyside is turning down a Newcastle move back in the winter of 2016.

Recycled rumours are nothing new, of course, and Reds fans will be familiar with the concept courtesy of lazy links to Arda Turan, Christian Tello, and a host of others over the years. Multi-year speculative transfer sagas very, very rarely come to pass, and it looks as though the same will be true of the long-running Lacazette-to-Liverpool rumours. Not because Lyon are determined to keep hold of their star asset, but rather because they are finally ready to sell, and the Reds are nowhere to be seen.

“If the club of Alex’s heart is capable of matching our demands, like Barcelona with Samuel Umtiti last year, then things will go well,” was Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas' poetic take on the situation.

“It also depends on any other outgoing transfers," he continued. "If other players feel Lyon are not big enough for them, we will look for players who are equally strong and have the right mindset.

“We will not remain inactive on the transfer market. If some players leave, we will re-invest that money in the squad.”

The Reds have made no secret of their transfer targets in the upcoming window, with Julian Brandt and Timo Werner reportedly the favoured attackers, in addition to midfielder Naby Keïta, and defenders Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Sessegnon. That there has been not a whisper about the 25-year old in the summer when his club looks set to let him go, presumably indicates that there is little, if any, genuine interest. With Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona reportedly sniffing around, this will likely mean a transfer is on the cards for the £35m-rated striker, and thus an escape from the transfer rumour merry-go-round for the foreseeable future.

Not to worry, though. We'll always have Ruben Neves. And Lucas Moura. And Mahmoud Dahoud. And William Carvalho. And so on.
