In a stunning turn of events, Chelsea clinched the Premier League title last night. Antonio Conte’s men turned things around from a disastrous 2015-16 campaign to win their sixth English top flight championship.
Once the title was confirmed, kind words of congratulations from all over the football world. Former players were among those who hailed Chelsea’s accomplishment.
Naturally this included Atlético Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

Torres, of course, spent several years at Anfield before moving to Chelsea. His time with Liverpool endeared him to the fans and his departure left many broken hearts in his wake. Still, the modern game makes one-club players exceedingly rare, and footballers end up carrying emotional ties to several teams and their fanbases over the course of their career. I’m inclined to believe that Torres’ connection to Chelsea and his genuine happiness at their title win does not diminish the warm feelings he has for Liverpool, and also does not (or should not) nullify the fans’ fond memories for him.
Liverpool fans, evidently, disagree.

@Torres @ChelseaFC You have lost the respect of all Liverpool fans now, even the few that still stayed with you. pic.twitter.com/Mu3pb5hyUC
