Despair, depression, anger - any one of these emotions were probably conjured during Bournemouth’s equalizer during Wednesday’s match at Anfield. The Cherries visited Liverpool having handed them another shock loss in December, and with the Reds on their own run of form, the chance to turn the tables didn’t seem out of sight. Until the same old story, our maestros turned to amateurs and Joshua King took advantage, with a well placed ball right through all the madness to bring the visitors level.
“We had the moments and we scored a wonderful goal, and usually you could close the game in one moment. We didn’t, we left it open,” the manager Jürgen Klopp said after the match. While much of the analysis came from the decision to bring on Joël Matip for Philippe Coutinho in the 64th minute, the change was simply made because Coutinho felt ill and had been sick during halftime. A decision that may or may not have gone
“And then a second ball after a set-piece and that made me nearly vomit, actually,” Klopp continued, speaking for most supporters when describing the equalizer in the 87th minute. “That’s, of course, not nice. But we have to take it. It’s my responsibility, all of this. I have to be clearer in these situations, obviously. But I will find a solution for this.”
With only seven matches left, there’s not a lot of time left to find that solution and maintain their position in the top four race. Thankfully Liverpool sit in third, but not without rivals nipping at their heels.
“We have to learn a lot. We had a few passes that we should not play. Nothing happened after these passes, but when we tried to play long balls, changing sides with wonderful long balls, it made no sense because the ball feels like it’s five minutes in the air until it gets there. The formation of the opponent is there too. It makes sense to switch the side [of play], but not in these moments. We could have let them run,” the manager added, when asked about his approach to the game. “Yes, we don’t have this experience, that’s right, probably you need things like tonight to get more experience than this, even though [the result] was not that good.
“On the other hand, we’ve probably still scored the most goals in the Premier League so far, so it’s part of the game that we try to create moments all the time. We have to get more experience in this, for sure.”
