Emre Can — midfielder and man with beautiful hair — has attributed his growth as a player at Liverpool to manager, Jürgen Klopp. Can had a rocky start at Anfield when he joined in summer 2014 but has since become a Klopp favourite with a growing presence on the team.
The journey to where he is today hasn’t been the easiest one for Can.
“Of course I had to change my style after I arrived in the Premier League because if you come to England, you have to play a more physical type of football,” Can said. “You have to play quicker as everything is faster here. I had to learn that.”
“I think I have done well and I would say I am happy with my three years in England so far but I know I still have a lot of improvements I can make.”
Can has spent a large part of this season playing through a calf injury. He’s only recently returned to form but having to meet Klopp’s expectations on the pitch and off is helping push him to achieve more.
“Klopp told me he expects a lot from me, but I expect a lot from myself as well. He’s a great, great manager and you really can learn a lot from him, not just on the pitch but outside the pitch too, as he is a really good guy.”
When asked about leadership and the role he believes he can play at Liverpool, Can was clear: he can become a leader at Anfield.
“I am getting older and I feel that I am taking more responsibility on the pitch and that’s my target,” he said.
“I want to push the team and help us to play good football.”
