I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that I took longer to get over Fernando Torres leaving Liverpool than I have actual breakups. The recent apology tour he has embarked on is doing wonders to mollify me, however, and I’m almost starting to believe that we can be friends again.
This chapter of the apology tour focuses on a familiar topic: how much he loves Steven Gerrard.
“I was a big fan of Stevie before I went to Liverpool, but playing with him was much better than expected,” Torres told Football Focus. “He was by far the best player I have ever played with and I would pay to play with him again.”
After three-and-a-half years at Liverpool, Torres moved to Chelsea for a reported sum of £50 million. He cut his hair and immediately forgot how to score (this version of history may be coloured by my own biases).
Torres never won the Premier league with Chelsea and voiced his regret that Gerrard never lifted the trophy either.
“I felt so sorry for Stevie because we didn’t have chances to win the Premier League, and Liverpool was so close [in 2014] after so many years.”
“It was really unfair on Stevie because he is the person who deserves to win the Premier League.”
“But that’s football, in one second everything can change.”
For old times’ sake, here are some of the most magical pieces of play that came out of one of the best partnerships Liverpool has seen in recent years.
