What a sigh of relief. It could be argued that Arsenal was always going to be an easy game - they are a top six team after all, and this season it appears that’s all the Reds have shown up against. No one needs reminding that most of Liverpool’s major wins this season have been against direct competition for those coveted top four spots, Arsenal included. And after the 7 goal madness that opened the season, much of the same was expected this weekend. Thankfully, 3-1 is what Liverpool ended up with, with no small contributions from Adam Lallana. The midfielder shone on Saturday against the Gunners, but kept humble.
“It was a huge three points,” the midfielder said post-match. "We knew we let a lot of people down against Leicester last week, including ourselves
"We have a massive 10/11 games left this season.
"We are still young and still feel we're learning. We are disappointed with how inconsistent we've been but we will put it right.
"We let a lot of people down Monday night, this is just a little bit on the way to putting it right.”
Time is quickly running out for the Reds to make their statement and hopefully secure their spot, and while the win against Arsenal was a good start - placing them in 3rd place behind Tottenham and Chelsea - next week will prove to be the real test. Liverpool face Burnley at home next Sunday and supporters can only hope that the confidence and good energy from the win today will have carried over. After all, now there’s something to prove and something to fight for - to prove to themselves that these lower table teams can be dispatched just as easily as the heavy hitters.
