Real Madrid Legends Praise Anfield Atmosphere

Luis Figo, Clarence Seedorf among former Madrid stars to talk up the home of their opposition

Liverpool Legends hosted Real Madrid Legends at Anfield earlier today as a fundraiser for the LFC Foundation. The match ended in a 4-3 win for the home side and some good-natured revenge for their loss two years earlier. But more to the point, the game raised money for a good cause and also served as a platform for more touching tributes for the late Ronnie Moran.

After the match, a few members of the Madrid side spoke to the press, and one theme kept coming up— the special atmosphere at Anfield.

Some choice quotes from the presser:

Luis Figo: “It's always amazing to play in stadiums like Anfield with this atmosphere, even when it's for a charity game and a fantastic cause.”

Clarence Seedorf: “I absolutely enjoyed it from the first to the last minute.”

Leo Beenhakker: “Everywhere plays football, but there are some places in Europe that are very special and magic. Every time I see matches in this stadium it's great to see the crowd and fantastic.”

Figo: “We tried to enjoy it as much as possible. It's not easy for me to come back and play a game after six months without playing or training properly.”

Seedorf: “The most important thing is to entertain people as much as we can. Seven goals and in the last minutes a bit of tension, it was all good.”

Beenhakker: “[Anfield]'s very famous in Holland, and every time the whole stadium starts singing You'll Never Walk Alone, it's fantastic to see.”

Figo: “What I do now is exercise that is nothing compared to what you need for football!”

Seedorf: “It's a great cause and participating in these kind of games is fantastic. I'm not the first and I won't be the last to say that Anfield is absolutely amazing.”

Beenhakker: “On one side, it's still important because we are all really still professionals and even if you are 40 or 50 or in my situation some years more, you always want to win. You hate to lose. That's the spirit of the game. It's amazing to see these guys playing at this age to do everything to win the game. It makes me a little bit emotional when I do these matches.”

This was fun! Can we do this every year?
